IMJ® Scoring

When scoring a winning hand we look for all valid GRADE ELEMENTS contained in the hand. Grade elements are individual components of a winning hand that carry scores. For example, a winning hand may consist of ALL PUNGS, PUNG(S) OF DRAGON, CHANCE FLOWER(S) - these are all grade elements of the hand. The combined scores of all valid elements will be the final scores of the winning hand. (The use of all upper case above is for easy reference only; in normal writing we shall "Capitalize Each Word" when quoting names of those valid grade elements.)

This page comes with two parts: the first part displays a table of all valid grade elements and the second part provides sample hands with comments for all of these elements. There are links built-in with the names in the table and links at the bottom of each sample demonstration blocks - this shall make navigation among the contents with ease.

(A) Grade Elements Table
Below is a full list of valid grade elements of the International Mahjong Rules. When assessing the grade value of a winning hand, other than a special winning hand, all possible grade elements from all groups, but to a maximum of one element per group only, may be counted, provided that the selected basic structure (group 26) of the hand remains unchanged. (Exceptions are marked with * in the table below - Refer to the rules for details of each exception.) Click on the name of a grade element to view its demonstration and explanatory comments.

Total number of elements
Remarks to scores:
#1 = The pai is obtained from either the head, the tail or from a Robbed Kong. If pai is obtained from the head or from the tail, the winning player may receive from each player the assigned scores according to the total number of fans. If pai is obtained from a Robbed Kong, the winning player may receive from the Chucker (the player who has attempted to set up the Kong), three times the assigned scores according to the total number of fans.
#2 = The pai is obtained from the floor and the winning player may receive from the player who has discarded the pai the assigned scores according to the total number of fans.
* = More than one element of the same group may be counted for scoring. (Refer to the Rules for details of each exception.)
Notes to the grade elements table:
The above table represents a complete set of grade elements recognized in the International Mahjong Rules. All grade elements (including special winning hands) are listed in groups of specific nature as outlined below:
  1. Groups 25.1 and 25.2 - SPECIAL WINNING HANDS. These are considered complete winning hands. Grade value awarded to each hand is final.
  2. Group 26 - Grade elements based on the BASIC PATTERN of a winning hand.
  3. Groups 27.1 through 27.4 - Grade elements based on the COMBINATION OF PAIS of a winning hand. Group 27.1 related to the pure and mixed series; Group 27.2 related to the Honours series; Group 27.3 related to the pung series of the Serials; Group 27.4 involves the chow series of the Serials.
  4. Groups 28.1 through 28.5 - Grade elements related to HOW - How the winning pai is obtained (groups 28.1 through 28.3) and how the general status of other pais is at the time of winning (groups 28.4 and 28.5).

25.1(1)
Grade Element
The Heaven 天胡
THE HEAVEN: Any winning hand, regardless of its structure or contents, that is declared after the dealing of pais and before the first pai is discarded by the jonga is defined as the Heaven, and is awarded a fixed 6 fans. The priority to declare the Heaven goes to the jonga. [Explanatory note: Any player may declare a special winning hand of Seven Flowers (art. 25.2(1)) or Eight Flowers (art. 25.2(2)) before the jonga discards the first pai, this will also be referred to as the Heaven.]
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 250101-01: Sample is in the structure of the Coward, containing Pung of Red Dragon. However, no extra fans will be counted for the Pung of Dragon, because the grade value of a special winning hand is final and value of other grade elements cannot be added to it.
Sample 250101-02: Sample contains the element of Pure Same in the structure of All Chows (more valuable than the Heaven). If, however, this hand is won as Heaven, the fixed grade value for the Heaven only will be awarded. Since this is only the beginning of the game, the player (the jonga) having been dealt with this hand should choose to discard a pai and aim to selfmake at a later time for a hand of Pure Same. (For this hand, one may discard 7 Wan and still calling for 1, 4 or 7 Wan to win. Or discard 9 Wan and call for 6, 9 Wan to win.).
Sample 250101-03: This sample contains the element of Seven Flowers, which is also a special winning hand. Sample 03 can be won by either the jonga or by any of the other three players. If a player other than the jonga holds this hand, he should declare WIN before the jonga proceeds to make the first discard.

25.1(2)
Grade Element
The Earth 地胡
THE EARTH: Any winning hand, regardless of its contents, that is declared on the first pai discarded by the jonga is defined as the Earth and is awarded a fixed 6 fans.
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 250102-01: The Earth is a special winning hand. It is achieved (or declared) on a specific occasion where the pattern of the hand is irrelevant. A fixed grade value (in number of fans) is awarded. Similar to the Heaven, if this hand (Sample 01) is dealt (where one of the pais is the first discard of the jonga) the player can declare WIN and receive a fixed value.
Sample 250102-02: Sample consists of the elements of All Pungs and Mixed Same and will carry higher value than just the Earth alone. In order to achieve the highest possible value, the player may choose not to win the Earth (simply ignore the first discard of the jonga) and wait for another discard or selfmake. Note: Other than All Pungs and Mixed Same (plus couple of Pungs of Honours that would give you extra value), you can also aim to achieve yet another special winning hand of much higher value - The All Hidden Pungs!

Grade Element
All Hidden Pungs
ALL HIDDEN PUNGS: A winning hand consisting of four pungs and a set of eyes, regardless of the kinds of the pais, that have never been exposed prior to winning, is called All Hidden Pungs and is awarded a fixed 13 fans. [Explanatory note: The essence of this element is that "all (of the 14) pais have never been exposed prior to winning". A hand containing any unfolded kong (art. 22.2) is not qualified for this element since the kong has been exposed as defined in art 23.6.]
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 250103-01: This WIN is achieved (declared) when certain specific conditions are met - The hand is in the structure of All Pungs and all pais have never been exposed prior to winning. The contents of the hand are irrelevant as a fixed value only is awarded. It can be declared any time as the winning pai is drawn. Sample 01 is a simple All Pungs hand. However, if all the pungs in the hand are not exposed and the hand is won on selfmake, it could worth much higher value. If you aim to win on All Hidden Pungs, and if you draw the 4th identical pai of a pung, discard it (don't make a kong) so that your entire hand remains not exposed! (Note: Always be caution if you are at the later part of the game and if you are about to discard an Honour or a One or a Nine of the Serials - At the later part of the game these pais are always considered dangerous as someone might be calling it for a hand with Thirteen Unios.) Hidden Pungs must always come with a selfmake hand, however, the pai last drawn to win the hand could be any pai, i.e., not necessary to be a pai to form the eyes.

Grade Element
Seven Consecutive Pairs 连七对
SEVEN CONSECUTIVE PAIRS: A winning hand that is in the combination of seven consecutive pairs of any one suit of the Serials, is called the Seven Consecutive Pairs and is awarded a fixed 13 fans.
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 250104-01: This element should be easy to understand: All pais must be in one Serial suite, must be in pairs and the pairs must be in consecutive sequence. Note: The hand can be won on discard or selfmake.
Sample 250104-02: (No additional comments.)

25.1(5)
Grade Element
Nine Gates
NINE GATES: If a winning hand consists of any one suit of the Searials in the specified form of 1112345678999 prior to winning, which would allow win on any pai of the same suit, then such winning hand is called the Nine Gates, and is awarded a fixed 13 fans.
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 250105-01: Since the unique character of this element is the combination of the concealed pais (in the above sample, all of the 1112345678999 Tan on the left) before a win is claimed, the onus is always on you to prove that you have possessed the specific combination prior to winning. Since the 14th pai (in this sample, the 2 Tan on the far right with a dotted line) can be obtained either from a discard or from a selfdraw, you must clearly separate it from the "concealed hand" if you draw it fresh from the wall.

25.2(1)
Grade Element
Seven Flowers 七只花
THE SEVEN FLOWERS: If a player already has six Flowers and if he draws the seventh Flower of his hand, he may declare win at once. The winning hand is considered on the drawing of the seventh Flower alone and is called the Seven Flowers and is awarded a fixed 3 fans. A player having drawn the seventh Flower in hand not declaring win loses the right to declare win on the Seven Flowers after he has proceeded to perform a move other than declaring win. [Explanatory note: The essence of this element is the number of Flowers the hand has; therefore whether the hand is too many or too few is irrelevant.]
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 250201-01: One should notice that, this hand is won because, and only because, the specific combination of the Flowers is met. The condition of all other pais of the hand is irrelevant. Hence even if the hand is too few or too many, the hand of Seven Flowers can still be won and scores are receivable from other players. Also notice that only a fixed low value is awarded to this special winning hand because it is achieved purely by luck.
Rule Article
25.2(2)
Grade Element
Eight Flowers 八只花
THE EIGHT FLOWERS: If a player already has seven Flowers and if he draws the eighth Flower of his hand, he may declare win at once. The winning hand is considered on the drawing of the eighth Flower alone and is called the Eight Flowers and is awarded a fixed 9 fans. A player having drawn the eighth Flowers in hand not declaring win loses the right to declare win on the Eight Flowers after he has proceeded to perform a move other than declaring win. [Explanatory note: The essence of this element is the number of Flowers the hand has; therefore whether the hand is too many or too few is irrelevant.]
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 250202-01: Similar to Seven Flowers, this hand is won because, and only because, the specific combination of the Flowers is met. The condition of all other pais of the hand is irrelevant. Note that a much higher value is awarded to Eight Flowers because, despite the fact that it is also achieved purely by luck, it involved the "risk taking factor" of the player who has decided not to win on the Seven Flowers but to continue the game.

25.2(3)
Grade Element
Seven Isolated Stars
SEVEN ISOLATED STARS: If a winning hand consists of 7 single pais of all titles of the Winds and the Dragons, plus any seven isolated pais of the Serials covering 3 suits each being in the specific sequence of 147, 258, 369 respectively, it is called the Seven Isolated Stars and is awarded a fixed 6 fans.
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 250203-01: All of the above sample hands are qualified for Seven Isolated Stars. Note the contents of the hand: the first portion of seven individual Honours is mandatory; the exact combination of the Serials may vary but they must fill in any seven of the nine 1-4-7, 2-5-8 and 3-6-9 spots. This hand can be won on a discard or a selfdraw.
Sample 250203-02: This sample hand is NOT qualified for Seven Isolated Stars, because the Serials in the hand cannot fit in the required 1-4-7, 2-5-8 and 3-6-9 spots. (The Serials in the hand are in the combination of 3-6-9, [1-]4-7, 3-6[-9], where pattern [2-5-8] is missing.)
Sample 250203-03: All of the above sample hands are NOT qualified either. The number of Honours must be exactly 7 and must cover all 7 titles (cannot be more or less than 7). Likewise, the hand must also consist of all three types of the Serials (must contain Tan, Sok and Wan that fit in the three groups of 1-4-7, 2-5-8 and 3-6-9).

Grade Element
Thirteen Unios
THE THIRTEEN UNIOS: If a player holds 14 pais, including pais already in his possession and pai obtainable in his turn of move, that are in the combination of one pai each of all titles of the Honours and one pai each of the titles 1 and 9 of all of the Serials, plus one pai identical to any of these mentioned pais, he may declare win. The winning hand is considered on the combination of the 14 pais alone and is called the Thirteen Unios and is awarded a fixed 13 fans.
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 250204-01: The Thirteen Unios is a special winning hand that can be won when a specific combination of pais is met. A player can win on a discard or by selfmake. Also note that a winning hand of Thirteen Unios has the "superior priority" over a discarded pai (art. 29) as well as a pai exposed for a kong (art. 23.7).

25.2(5)
Grade Element
Kong To Fourth
THE KONG TO FOURTH: If a player makes four consecutive kongs in a row, he needs not draw a pai from the tail any more but is deemed to have won the game, provided there is one, and only one, pai left in his concealed hand. The winning hand is considered on the act of making four kongs alone and is called the Kong To Fourth, and is awarded a fixed 15 fans.
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 250205-01: A winning hand of Kong To Fourth is reached as soon as four consecutive kongs are made - The contents of the hand are irrelevant and there is even no need to draw a replacement pai. It is true the chance of making four kongs in a row without a break is extremely slim, but it is still theoretically possible. This shall remind players that there is always the highest goal that is waiting to be achieved. The above sample indicates a valid hand won on Kong To Fourth - Four kongs in a row have just been made, the last drawn pai is a South and only one more pai is left in the concealed hand. The win can be declared at once and there is no need to draw a replacement pai.
Sample 250205-02: Sample 02 indicates a hand similar to Sample 01: Four kongs in a row have just been made, the last drawn pai is a White Dragon and a replacement pai is not yet drawn. This hand is, however, NOT valid as there are two pais left in the concealed hand. (This hand is considered too many.)

Grade Element
The Coward
THE COWARD: If a winning hand consists of sets of both chow and pung, and regardless of any other description, it is called the Coward and awarded half fan.
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 260100-01: Although The Coward is by itself a grade element, it also represents one of four basic structures of a winning hand. That's why in other variants this element is also called a "Chicken Hand", which is a wrong concept. One should correctly recognize that the Coward ("Chicken Hand") shall not be treated as all that a winning hand has, and that in most occasions it is just one of many grade elements that form the entire winning hand. Sample 01 represents a typical hand that contains only one grade element, the Coward. Note that elements related to HOW - How the winning pai is obtained (groups 28.1 through 28.3) - may be added to this hand.
Sample 260100-02: Sample 02 contains chows and pungs, hence the hand's basic structure is the Coward. In addition, however, it also contains the element Pure Same.
Sample 260100-03: Sample 03 is in the structure of the Coward, but has much more value than just the Coward. It contains: the Coward, Mixed Same, Little Three Dragons, Unio In All.

All Chows 平胡
ALL CHOWS: In addition to a set of eyes, if a winning hand consists of sets of chow only and regardless of any other description, it is called All Chows and awarded 1 fan.
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 260200-01: All Chows is also a basic structure of a winning hand. By definition, it must contain chows only in addition to the eyes. Sample 01 is a typical, simple All Chows hand, containing all of the three Serial suits.
Sample 260200-02: Sometimes an All Chows hand could be expensive if you pay a little bit more effort when building the hand. Sampe 02 shows a simple All Chows hand, but containing the element Pure Same that caries much more value.

All Pungs
ALL PUNGS: In addition to a set of eyes, if a winning hand consists of sets of pung only and regardless of any other description, it is called All Pungs and awarded 3 fans.
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 260300-01: All Pungs is another basic structure of a winning hand. All Pungs seems to be easier to achieve since one can claim a discard of any player to form a pung. Note: A pung can easily bring you extra value (e.g., pungs of any of the Dragons, or of any Wind pai that is also the Chance Wind or Chance Round, etc.). For pais that don't give you extra value, try not to pung it or pung only at the later part of the game, or use your pair as the eyes in your concealed hand. Sample 01 is a typical, simple All Pungs hand (if West is a Chance Wind or Chance Round, extra value can be added to the hand). Note that by definition, the kong of 2 Sok in the hand is deemed to be a pung (art. 24.2).
Sample 260300-02: Sample 02 is an example how extra value can be earned from some of the pungs. This hand contains these grade elements: All Pungs, Pure Honours, Little Three Dragons. (Extra value can be earned from the pungs of East and West if they are also Chance Wind or Chance Round.)

Seven Pairs 七对子
SEVEN PAIRS: SEVEN PAIRS: If a winning hand consists of seven pairs only, and regardless of any other description, it is called the Seven Pairs and awarded 3 fans.
Sample hands & comments:
Sample 260400-01: Seven Pairs is also a basic structure of a winning hand. If you choose to win in this structure, the chance of forming additional grade elements is limited. Sample 01 represents a typical Seven Pairs hand. Note that although you have four pieces of 6 Tan you don't have a kong in your hand because once determined, the basic structure of your hand (here the structure is Seven Pairs) cannot be changed. Accordingly, the four Red Dragon in the hand cannot be treated as a kong and therefore, no extra value can be counted.
Sample 260400-02: Sample 02 explains why the chance of forming additional grade elements is limited with a Seven Pairs structure. Here you have all the Dragons in hand, you cannot count the element Big Three Dragons because with this hand, you don't have "kongs" of the Dragons, but two pairs of each of the Dragons only, which won't give you any extra value. (Strategy guides: If you have this hand, try to keep 3 pungs of the Dragons concealed and gradually discard the excess piece of each Dragon. Pung the 4 Wan if you have a chance. Obtain a new pai as the eye. You are now on the way to win with the Big Three Dragons when no body even knows about it!)
Sample 260400-03: Sample 03 is a Seven Pairs hand but you can also count Pure Terminals. By definition (art. 27.1(1)), the Ones and Nines of the Pure Terminals are not restricted to be in the form of chow, pung or kong.
Sample 260400-04: Sample 04 will be awarded with Seven Pairs and Pure Same. Similar to Sample 03, Pure Same (art. 27.1(4)) does not require pais to be in the form of chow, pung or kong.

Sample hands & comments:
Sample 270101-01: By definition the Ones and Nines that form Pure Terminals (and the entire hand) need not be in any specific form. Both Sample 01 and Sample 02 are typical hands containing Pure Terminals. Sample 01 contains All Pungs, Pure Terminals.

Sample hands & comments:
Sample 270301-01: Sample 01 shows the exact pais that are required to form the element of Four Jumping Pungs (i.e., the eyes are not included). With Four Jumping Pungs, the element All Pungs will always come together because All Pungs is formed with all pais (including the eys) of a hand - Refer to samples below.
Sample 270301-02: Sample 02 contains: All Pungs, Mixed Same, Four Jumping Pungs. (Note: After counting the value for Four Jumping Pungs, you cannot separate the first three bangos to form three chows and add extra value of Three Identical Chows to the hand, because by doing so you will inevitably change the basic structure of the hand - Refer to art. 24.1 for details.)
Sample 270301-03: Sample 03 contains: All Pungs, Pure Same, Four Jumping Pungs.
Sample 270301-04: Sample 03 contains: All Pungs, Four Jumping Pungs. Anything wrong with this hand? Strategy guides: Compare samples 02, 03 and 04. The element Mixed Same or Pure Same is missing in sample 04, thus its overall value is much lower. If condition allows (e.g., in the early part of a game), try to build Mixed Same or Pure Same to the hand; otherwise (e.g., not many pais are left on the wall or other player's hand is almost done), win quick with whatever you have.
